Dear Residents of the City of Groton,
The snowfall we’ve experienced is unprecedented - thank you for your patience as crews clear our roads and public spaces. I want to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to our Public Works and Parks & Recreation crews, Police and Fire Departments, Groton Utilities personnel and all essential/first responders for their outstanding service throughout the blizzard. Our staff has been putting in long hours under challenging conditions, and while significant progress has been made, it will take time before all areas are cleared.
We ask for your continued patience as we move methodically through the city to ensure streets are safe and passable. Please do not shovel snow back into the roadway. Doing so creates additional hazards and slows down our progress, making it more difficult for crews to complete their work efficiently.
If you are able, I encourage you to check in on neighbors who may need assistance. The volume of snowfall and the buildup from plowed roadways can be overwhelming, especially for seniors and those with limited mobility. A small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
We also ask residents to remain mindful of pedestrians throughout our city — individuals walking to work, children walking to school, and everyone in between. Our Snow Removal Ordinance, 216, provides 24 hours following the end of a snowfall to clear sidewalks in front of your property. We recognize that this may present challenges for some households, and we encourage a spirit of neighborliness during this time. We understand that clearing sidewalks may take longer than usual, but we ask that you make every reasonable effort to clear the sidewalks adjacent to your property as soon as you are able.
We are facing this together as a community, and together we will get through it. Brighter days are ahead.
Respectfully,
Jill Rusk
Mayor, City of Groton
