Elections

The City Clerk is responsible for only the City elections in May of odd numbered years.

The City Clerk prepares the ballot for the voting machines and for the absentee ballots. An official list of candidates is prepared and forwarded to Secretary of the State. Absentee ballots are issued by this office. An application is available and must be completed and returned to the City Clerk prior to the issuance of the ballot. Ballots are returned to the City Clerk for delivery to the Absentee Ballot Moderator for counting. The City Clerk is required to keep an accurate accounting of all absentee ballot applications and absentee ballots issued.

All election supplies are the responsibility of the City Clerk.

On Election Day, the City Clerk must be in her office to receive absentee ballots up to 8:00 p.m.. Once the polls have closed the Head Moderator will tally all the counted votes from the machines and absentee ballots and deliver those numbers to the City Clerk.

The results of these elections are then reported to the Secretary of State and are part of the permanent record.

It is the responsibility of the City Clerk to inform the Secretary of the State of any vacancies in an elective office whether by death or resignation. It is also her duty to notify the Secretary when a vacancy in an elective office has been filled.

The City Clerk informs the Chairmen of City Committees of vacancies in offices that must be filled.
