Fire Department – Free 9 Volt Batteries Available for Smoke Alarms

It is very important that every home has a sufficient number of functional smoke alarms installed in order help save lives. Each bedroom in your home should have a smoke alarm installed as well as at least one on each level of living space. According to the U.S. Fire Administration three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms save lives, plain and simple.

Smoke alarms require a certain amount of maintenance. Though not needed to be performed often, these small steps will help ensure the safety of your family.

  • Test smoke alarms once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace batteries when needed. Alarm usually beep when the battery is running low.
  • Replace smoke alarms every ten years – the manufactured date should be on the underside of the unit.


Due to a generous donation The City of Groton Fire Department has 9 volt batteries available for any City of Groton resident for the purpose of replacing failing fire alarm batteries. Residents may come to either of our two City Firehouses, located at 140 Broad Street and 416 Benham Road, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. We will ask each person that comes in how many bedrooms and how many stories their house is. Reasonable accommodations will be made, but please keep in mind there is a limited supply.
