Electric Boat continues to make progress on its expansion in the South Yard. The company officially broke ground of the South Yard Assembly Building in mid-September. It has also established a project trailer on the construction site.
The Electric Boat Facilities Master Plan team will soon begin site work to enable the launch of Columbia submarines. Specifically, the team will perform excavation on land and in the water that will prepare the area for construction of a floating dock to allow for launch of these new submarines. This excavation will require the removal of approximately ½ acre of rock on the land side and the adjacent shoreline in the Thames River near EB’s property.
These efforts will include the careful and controlled use of engineered explosives commonly used for construction. This work will be performed by a team from CDB General Contractors who are experts in this type of site work and are licensed by the State of Connecticut. The work on land will start in late October/early November and continue for about one month. Water work will begin in the same time period and continue for about 2 months. These controlled activities will take place about once daily in the late afternoon, approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours before sunset.
Thank you for your continued patience throughout this process. If you have any concerns regarding this work, please contact the City of Groton Police Dispatch at 860-445-2451.
